Despite your best efforts to house and secure your exotic pet, if you have a lost exotic pet there are solutions available to you.

The first step of course is that you should be ideally checking on your exotic pets on a daily basis. This way you will be able to ensure your pets are fit and healthy, change the water is their bowl and so on. Just as importantly, if you have lost your exotic pet you will also be able to tell within a 24 window when they managed to make their escape.

As soon as you realize your exotic pet has escaped you should immediately close all doors and windows of your home – even internal doors. There is a good chance that your exotic pet is still inside your house and so doing this reduces the chances of them escaping into the big wide world where catching them may be rather more difficult.

In my experience of lost exotic pets, there are a number of places that seem to be popular places for them to hide in the home.

Firstly, a surprising number of exotic pets, once they have escaped, tend to stay quite close to their vivarium so a handy tip is to slowly and quietly check around the tank. Is your pet behind it, ontop of it or under it?

If not, all is not lost. Exotic animals seem to then often head for either a warm, sunny basking place, or a dark, secure hiding place.

So search near, on and behind radiators. Look on window sills and on both sides of your curtains. Finally see if there is furniture that your pet could have climbed under or behind.

Work your way slowly and methodically through the house, checking each room one after the other, and ensuring you close the doors behind you as you move from room to room.

If you don’t have any luck then you have a decision to make. The first is simply to wait. Often an exotic pet will crawl out of it’s hiding place when it gets cold or hungry and you may see it simply crawling across the floor and if you’re reasonably certain your pet must still be in your home this can be a good plan of action. Regular checks during the night with a torch may produce the necessary results.

Your final option even if this does not work is to contact the local police and rescue centers to see if anything has been handed in, and to consider placing “lost” posters around your neighbourhood, though appreciate that a lost snake may not elicit too much sympathy from many people!
